Five examples of electromagnetic wave phenomenon including a brief description. Also state the most important electromagnetic wave phenomenon and breifly explain why.

Solutions

Expert Solution

An electromagnetic wave consists of a fluctuating electric field and a fluctuating magnetic field of the same frequency and the same phase. Electromagnetic waves are produced by accelerated charges. There are seven different electromagnetic waves.

They are Radio waves, Micro waves, Infrared radiations, Visible light, Ultraviolet rays, X-rays, Gamma ray.

Micro wave

The region in between infrared rays and short radio waves in electromagnetic spectrum is called micro wave region. The wavelength of microwave range between 1*10^-3m - 1*10^-1m.The frequency range of microwave is between is 3*10^9 Hz - 3*10^11Hz. The energy limits ranging between 2*10^-24J – 2*10^-22J.Microwave is widely used in RADAR, satellite communication, mobile phone, microwave oven.

Infrared radiations.

The region in between Visible light and microwaves in electromagnetic spectrum is called infrared region. The wavelength of infrared region ranges between 7*10^-7m -1*10^-3m. Frequency ranges between 3*10^11Hz -4*10^14Hz. The energy limits of infrared region ranges between 2*10^-22J-3*10^-19J. The major applications of infrared radiationns are physiotherapy ,infrared camera, for determination of molecular structure.

X-Ray

The region between Ultraviolet rays and Gamma rays in electromagnetic spectrum is called X-ray region. The wavelength region of X-rays are 1*10^-11m -1*10^-8m. The frequency ranges between 3*10^16Hz -3*10^9Hz.The energy limits of X-ray region is 2*10^-17J -2*10^-14J.Applications of X-ray is to take X-ray photograph of human body, to study crystal structure.

Ultraviolet rays

The region in between X-ray and Visible light in electromagnetic spectrum is called Ultraviolet rays. The wavelength of ultraviolet rays ranges from 1*10^-8m -4*10^-7m.the frequency ranges between 7.5*10^14Hz-3*10^16Hz.Energy limits of ultraviolet region is     5*10^-19J - 2*10^-17J.Applications of ultraviolet includes , helps to produce vitamin D in our skin.Used in water purifiers ,used to sterilize bottle waters.

Gamma rays

The region above X-rays in electromagnetic spectrum is called Gamma rays. The wavelength of gamma rays is less than 1*10^-11m. The frequency of this region is more than 3*10^19Hz.The energy limits of this region is greater than 2*10^-14J. The applications of Gamma rays are study of nuclear structure, for the treatment of cancer, to sterilize surgical instruments, to detect cracks in underground metal pipes.

The most important electromagnetic wave phenomenon is visible light.its the region between ultraviolet and infrared rays in electromagnetic spectrum. Its wavelength ranges between 4*10^-7m -7*10^-7m. The frequency of visible light is 4*10^14Hz-7.5*10^14HZ.The energy limits of these region is 3*10^-19J -5*10^-19J.The major application of visible light is that it help us to see objects. in manufacturing lasers we use concentrate visible lights. Cd players etc. Electronic devices like TV and other   screens works with visible light. etc.All this application makes this electromagnetic wave phenomenon important.
