A tank contains methane at 1000psia and 140F. Another tank of equal volume contains ethane at 500psia and 140F. The two tanks are connected, the gases are allowed to mix and the temperature is restored to 140F. Calculate the final pressure, the composition of the mixture, and the partial pressures of the components at final conditions. Do not assume that ideal gas equations apply.
Z-factor for methane is 0.95, and ethane is 0.77
Solution.
The equation is

The amount of methane is

The amount of ethane is

The composition of mixture is
by amount.
If Vtank = 1, the volume of each container is 0.5 and partial pressure of methane is
p = nzRT = 0.163(0.95)(10.732)(140+460)/2 = 498.6 psia
the partial pressure of ethane is
p = nzRT = 0.101(0.77)(10.732)(140+460)/2 = 250.4 psia
Therefore, the final pressure is 250.4+498.6=749.0 psia.
