Summarize the theme of “head, heart, and hands” in Metropolis and explain how this symbolism can be understood in relation to the Christian religion. (1000 WORDS)
Metropolis, a 1927 film directed by Fritz Lang. The film depicts of the social crisis between workers and owners, the transformation of society through the use of science and technology. The film shows that the transformation of a city is done by machines which turn that city into a marvel of modernity; but also at the same time, transform the Metropolis workers into robotic slaves. In Metropolis, the major struggle lies in the tension between classes; Whereas classes are divided into two parts,
A. Upper Class:- Its a class above ground. An elite class where people are dressed in a suite or other kind of more formal clothing a symbol of their status.
B. Lower Class:- The lower class resides mainly below ground. Who worked in orders of Upper class.
Now, let us understand the concept of "Head, Heart, and Hand" which shown in Metropolis.
Head:- The HEAD is at the top of society. They are the highrise realm, being the power and authority of the city symbolized the "Head". They are the lawmaker, they are the architects responsible for the creation of metropolis. And are the ones that truly enjoy its pleasure.
HAND:- The SUBTERRANEAN (lower class) realm talks about the machine and the "Hand" as the driving force behind the workings of the city. The machine is needed to monitor all the times. Also, there is a seen in the movies where all the workers are working as the gear in a synchronised manner and steam is generated, The shifts between workers are endless.
HEART:- The mediator between the Hand and the Heart is the Heart. The message which is conveyed by the film Metropolis, it simply states that there need to be understanding between the "Hands" and the "Head" in order for them to work in harmony, This bond is established by the workings of the "Heart".
The fundamental of using HEAD, HEART, AND HAND s to make a sigh of the cross (religious symbol in the Christian community). I start with touching your forehead and your heart then your left shoulder, right shoulder and back to the heart again. This version incorporates your whole body into the sign and it's the one that unifies the whole church because all done it together.
