A solution contains one or more of the following ions: Hg2+2, Ba2+, and Fe2+. When potassium chloride is added to the solution, a precipitate forms. The precipitate is filtered off and potassium sulfate is added to the remaining solution, producing no precipitate. When potassium carbonate is added to the remaining solution, a precipitate forms. Part B Write net ionic equations for the formation of each of the precipitates observed. Express your answers as chemical equations separated by a comma. Identify all of the phases in your answer.

Expert Solution

answer: when we add KOH to the given solution contain  Hg2+2, Ba2+, and Fe2+ ions, the iron will displace the potassium atom i.e. double displacement reaction takes place during precipitation formation. the FeCl2 is insoluble in water, therefore, precipitation takes place.

balance reaction -  Fe2+(aq)+ 2KCl(aq)----------> 2K+(aq)+ FeCl2(s)

ionic equation - Fe2+ (aq) + 2K+(aq) + 2Cl- (aq) ----------> 2K+(aq) + FeCl2(s)

when we add K2SO4 again in remaining solution, the double displacement reaction takes place but the precipitation does not take place because products (BaSO4 (aq) and HgSo4) which are form, soluble in water. So they will dissociate into ions and during a reaction reactants, molecules also dissociate into ions.

therefore we find ions that are on the reactants' side can also be found on the products' side. This implies that all the species will exist as ions in solution and no precipitate will be formed.

The balanced chemical equation-

Ba+2(aq)+ 2K2SO4(aq) -------------> BaSO4 (aq) + 2K+(aq)

same for Hg+2

The balanced chemical equation-

Hg+2(aq)+ 2K2SO4(aq) -------------> HgSO4(aq) + 2K+(aq)

=> when we add potassium carbonate in solution

Balanced equation:
K2CO3(aq) + Ba(OH)2(aq) -----> 2 KOH(aq) + BaCO3(S)

ionic equation - 2K+(aq) + CO3-2(aq) + Ba+2(aq) + 2OH-(aq) -----> 2K+ + 2OH-(aq) + BaCO 3(S)

for Hg+2

2K+(aq) + CO3-2(aq) + Hg+2(aq) + 2OH-(aq) -----> 2K+ + 2OH-(aq) + HgCO3(S)

hey if you find any doubt feel free to ask and if you like a lesson please give thumbs up. thanks!
