Define, differentiate, tell the cellular location and give an example of each of the two different types of ways a mammalian cell can generation ATP from ADP and Pi.
1) substrate level phosphorylation- a phosphate is transferred from an organic molecule directly at the ADP to make ATP.
2) oxidative phosphorylation- indirect synthesis of ATP that requires redox reactions involving O2 as a final electron acceptor and uses a electrochemical gradient.
substrate level phosphorylation | oxidative phosphorylation |
Direct phosphorylation | indirect phosphorylation |
Occurs in Krebs cycle ans glycolysis | occurs in ETC |
4 ATP are produced | 30 ATP are produced |
Change in substrate redox potential is less | change in redox potential of substrate is more |
Partial oxidation of substrate occurs | complete oxidation of substrate occurs |
Location of substrate level phosphorylation is cytoplasm and mitochondrial matrix.
Location of oxidative phosphorylation is inner membrane of mitochondria.
Example of oxidative phosphorylation- oxidation of glucose into CO2 and water generate 28 ATP.
Example of substrate level phosphorylation- ATP synthesis, when PEP is converted into pyruvate by pyruvate kinase
