in one pargraph, compare and contrast between the disallination processes, msf and rp
RO and MSF are the two common methods of desalination
process.
RO has much higer yield compared to MSF i.e for the same output the
intake of sea water is 1/3 in RO and this reduces the power
consumption, pumping costs of sea water. MSF requires heat energy
for heating the brine before vaporization where as RO requires
considerabe amount of energy for pressurizing the water to membrane
filters. For RO elaborate arrangements for pre-treatment to remove
the biological organisms, suspended solids, debris are requires,
where as MSF is a vaporisation process such elaborate pre-treatment
facilities are not required. Output of the RO systems depends on
the the quality of the sea water feed and where as it is not the
case with MSF as this is a vaporization process. MSF plants are
considerably large than RO plants die to which construction and
land costs are high. As steam is used, piping, scaling which
requires maintenance adds up to the cost in MSF. MSF produces water
with less than 100 mg/L of dissolved solids where as RO produces
output with 400 mg/L of dissolved solids. Improved membrane
technology , use of low cost materials, modular system of material
reduces the maintenance costs of the RO. Technological advances in
RO systems have reduced the unit cost of water making it easier to
choose between the systems.
