Difference between spermatogenesis and
oogenesis-
Feature |
Spermatogenesis |
Oogenesis |
Definition |
Production of sperms from
spermatogonia |
Production of eggs from oogonia |
Organ involved |
Testes |
Ovary |
Time of development |
This occurs after puberty till death. It
is a continuous process |
Primary oocytes are formed in utero.
Completion of first meiotic division takes place after ovulation
and secondary meiosis occurs after fertilization |
Number of gametes formed |
Four gametes are produced by a single
primary spermatocyte |
Single primary oocyte gives rise to a
secondary oocyte and a polar body( that is discarded ) after
completion of meiosis 1. |

Similarities between spermatogenesis and
oogenesis-
- Both the processes occur in the reproductive organs
- Haploid gametes are produced at the end of both spermatogenesis
and oogenesis.
- Mitosis as well as meiosis is involved in the production of
gametes.
- Both processes are meant to carry out the fertilization
process.
