Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the PROCESSES of spermatogenesis and oogenesis.
Difference between spermatogenesis and oogenesis-
| Feature | Spermatogenesis | Oogenesis |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Production of sperms from spermatogonia | Production of eggs from oogonia |
| Organ involved | Testes | Ovary |
| Time of development | This occurs after puberty till death. It is a continuous process | Primary oocytes are formed in utero. Completion of first meiotic division takes place after ovulation and secondary meiosis occurs after fertilization |
| Number of gametes formed | Four gametes are produced by a single primary spermatocyte | Single primary oocyte gives rise to a secondary oocyte and a polar body( that is discarded ) after completion of meiosis 1. |
