Death with dignity, commonly known as physician assisted suicide, is a highly controversial topic in this country. There are now 5 states that have death with dignity statutes. Do you believe in physician assisted suicide? Is this a consideration that should remain with the states or should it be federal law?

Expert Solution

People have the right to lead a life with dignity and similarly, they also have the right to die with dignity. This would mean that there are people round the world who struggle with terminal illnesses without any hope for survival. They would endure intolerable pain and suffering while both the physician and the patients know that they are not worth the pain. Thus, if the patient wishes to end the patient’s life, Physician assisted suicide could be administered. It would not only save the pain and suffering of the patients but also the sufferings of the family members and the resources of the medical field that could be used on someone who would have the chances of survival. In my opinion, the power to decide on physician assisted suicide should rest in the hands of the federal government because there should be a uniform law that would benefit everyone in the country, rather than differences in treatment in the same country. This is also because of the fact that it’s one of the most important issues that’s being discussed on a global level, especially in the individualistic cultures.
