Does Dracula--from what we have read--have a protagonist? If so, who is it? Jonathan? Arthur? Mina? Dr. Seward? Van Helsing? ... Dracula? Pick one single passage from the text to explain either a) who the protagonist is, or b) why there isn't one.
If we had to choose a single character to be the hero or heroine of Dracula, it would be Mina Murray Harker. She is the most complicated character in the novel (check out Mina's "Character" section for more) and she's the one we stick with the longest—we read more letters and diary entries from Mina than from anyone else, except Dr. Seward. In Bram Stoker's original novel, Mina is not only not in love with Dracula, she is actively repelled by him. ... Mina, throughout the novel, is in love with her fiance and later husband Jonathan Harker. She adores him, suffers for him, worries over him, and both saves and is saved by him.The rest of the novel deals with the group's efforts to spare Mina a vampiric fate by tracking and attempting to kill Dracula. When Van Helsing attempts to bless her by placing a wafer of sacramental bread against her forehead it burns her flesh, leaving a scar, thus proving that Dracula has made her unholy.
