Dylan made 3 ham sandwiches and 2 Turkey sandwiches and put them in a paper bag. at lunchtime Dylan will randomly select 1 sandwich from the bag, and then Johnny will randomly select 1 sandwich from the bag.

Find the following probabilities. Show your work.
P(Dylan gets ham AND Johnny gets turkey)
P(Dylan gets turkey AND Johnny gets turkey)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ham sandwiches = 3

Turkey sandwiches = 2

Total = 5

(a)

Selection 1: Dylan = Ham sandwich.

                  P(Dylan = Ham sandwich) = 3/5 = 0.6

After Dylan select 1 Ham sandwich:

Ham sandwith = 2

Turkey sandwich = 2

Total = 4

Selection 2: Johnny = Turkey sandwich

                P(Johnny = Turkey sanswich) = 2/4 = 0.5

So,

P(Dylan gets ham AND Johnny gets turkey) = 0.6 X 0.5 = 0.3

(b)

Selection 1: Dylan = Turkey sandwich

                    P(Dylan = Turkey sandwich) = 2/5 = 0.4

After Dylan selects 1 Turkey sandwich:

Ham sandwich = 3

Turkey sandwich = 1

Total = 4

Selection 2: Johnny = Turkey sandwich

                 P(Johnny = Turkey sandwich) = 1/4 = 0.25

So,

P(Dylan gets turkey AND Johnny gets turkey) = 0.4 X 0.25 = 0.1
