Some important steps in making a
referral when a child requires additional support are as
follows:-
- Recognition
This is one of the first steps when it comes to the whole referral
process. This is because at first all of the children have needs
but the teacher or the mentor should be able to recognize when a
child has some special needs.
- Pre-referral
This step is to provide the child with some additional help before
he or she may be referred for some special education. This is a
necessary step which should be undertaken by the teachers for
effective intervention before the problem grows.
- Referral
This step is undertaken when the special attention and intervention
also do not end up in helping the child. The child is then referred
to for some special education by the teachers or the
parents.
- Evaluation
The evaluation of the child is need to be done after 60 days post
the date of referral. This is to be done by special educators to
understand the extent to which special education has been able to
help the child in addressing the concerns which were present.
