Give an example of how patterns of development psychology insight into a mature form.
There have been many instances where development psychology has proven to be a good explanation as to why we behave the way we behave or why we think and perceive things the way we do.
Example:
A classic example is Jean Piaget's three mountain illustration. In the illustration, a mountain's three different views are placed on a table and a doll is assumed as the subject. When a three or for year old child is asked to point of out the mountain's view from the doll's perspective, the child almost always points out to the mountain's view from his/her own perspective. Whereas, when a seven or eight-year-old is posed with the same question, the answer is as expected.
This shows that there is not enough cognitive development in a
three or four-year-old to know about perspectives. This is a great
insight into children's minds and about what we as adults should
expect from a child of three or four years of age. There should be
no pressure on them to think from another child's perspective at
this age because they are inherently incapable of doing it. This is
a great learning and a deep insight into how maturity is viewed in
developmental psychology.
