Is there ever a time when a business decision is legal, but unethical? Please explain your response providing an example if possible.
Ans Yes there are many times or situations when a business decision is legal but unethical. Businesses must take extra care to respect the ethical perspectives of all of their stakeholders.
Some examples are as follows—
1. Hydraulic fracturing in oil drilling operation causes direct negative impact on environment and its surrounding community. It is legal at that time when it is operating but it is unethical from environment concerns point of view.
2. Before credit card act of 2009 came into existence, banks could attract and open credit accounts of teenagers with promise of financial freedom, regardless of the teenagers’ ability to repay the high-interest debts.
3. Commercial casinos allow gambling legally but it is not ethical for people who ruin their lives with a gambling addiction.
4. The fast food industries are legal but it is unethical because they can be risky for consumers’ health perspective
5. Cigarette, alcohol and Tobacco manufacturing companies make decisions to make these products it is legal to make these decisions and manufacture these products but it is unethical because it will cost the health as well as life of people who consume it.
6. In 2010 when Toyota make decision to manufacture cars and these cars have some errors it is legal but unethical decision because it will cost lives of many customers
