Epilepsy is defined as a neurological condition which is marked by
sudden recurrent episodes of seizures, loss of consciousness, and
sensory disturbances.
Clinical indications for first line drugs for partial and
generalized seizures:
1. Valproic acid –
• It is indicated as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy
in complex partial seizures.
• Also indicated in patients with complex and simple
absense seizures.
2. Lamotrigine –
• Indicated in adjunctive therapy for partial
seizures.
• Effective in primary generalized tonic- clonic
seizures.
3. Topiramate-
• Indicated in partial onset seizures
• Primary generalized tonic- clonic seizures
Indications of first line drugs for partial seizures:
1. Carbamazepine-
• As an anticonvulsant drug.
2. Phenytoin-
• In generalized tonic- clonic seizures
• Complex partial seizures
• In seizures which occurs during neurosurgery.
3. Oxcarbazepine-
• Monotherapy for adults in partial seizures.
• Adjunctive therapy for children and older.
4. Ethosuximide-
• In absense epilepsy
5. Zonisamide-
• Adjunctive therapy for partial seizures
6. Phenobarbital-
• Seizures in neonates
• Generalized tonic- clonic seizures
• Partial seizures
• Status epilepticus.
7. Primidone-
• Effective in psychomotar, and in grand mal
seizures.
