What energy system recovers most slowly with repeated sprints and why?
a) glycolysis
b)oxidative phosphorylation
c)phosphocreatine hydrolysis
C) Phosphocreatine takes atleast three of rest to recover after repeated sprints. In contraction of muscles ATP molecules are hydrolyzed into adenosine diphosphate and an inorganic phosphate and energy is generated. In regeneration, creatine phosphate transfers a high energy phosphate to the adenosine diphosphate and produces ATP and creatine. This process is limited because the human body cannot produce creatine naturally. After depletion of ATP produced through hydrolysis of Phosphocreatine, it takes atleast three minutes to produce another molecule of ATP.
A) Even after strenuous exercises(sprints), glycolysis energy system is only dominant for about 10-20 seconds. It provides energy by using glucose and oxygen. It provides energy for a period ranging from 10seconds to two minutes continuously.
B) Oxydative phosphorylation provides ATP by using oxygen in mitochondria by using ADP as substrate. It recovers slower than glycolysis and faster than Phosphocreatine. The recovery time depends on the rate of respiration as oxygen is needed for the conversion of ADP to ATP.
