Provide brief definitions and an example for each of the following.
a. acute care
b. ALOS
c. Chronic disease
d. Data Mart
e. BI
Solution:
(a.) Acute care:
Definition : Acute care is a secondary health care unit where the patient receives active but temporary treatment for a serious injury or episode of illness, emergency medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. Acute care services are generally delivered by teams of health care professionals from a range of medical and surgical specialties.
Example of Acute care are:
(b.) ALOS :
Definition : ALOS stands for Average Length of Stay that represents the average number of days in a hospital for each admission, calculated by dividing the sum of inpatient days spent by the number of patient admissions with the same diagnosis-related group classification; can be used to predict a patient's expected length of stay.
formula :
Length of stay = date of discharge - date of admission
Average length of stay = Length of stay / Total number of discharges
Example of ALOS are:
Six patients admitted on a hospital named Rohan, Priya, Kumar, Mani. Rohan is admitted on 4th april 2013 and discharged on 10th april 2013. Priya is admitted on 2nd april 2013 and discharged on 13th april 2013. Kumar is admitted on 15th april 2013 and discharged on 20th april 2013. Mani is admiited on 22nd april 2013 and discharged on 30th april 2013
Length of stay = date of discharge - date of admission
LOS of Rohan = [(4-4-2013) - (10-4-2013)] = 6
LOS of Priya = [(2-4-2013) - (13-4-2013)] = 11
LOS of Kumar = [(15-4-2013) - (20-4-2013)] = 5
LOS of Mani = [(22-4-2013) - (30-4-2013)] = 8
Total Length of stay = 6+11+5+8 =30 days
Average Length of Stay = Total length of stay / Total number of discharges
= 30/6
= 5 days
(c.) Chronic disease :
Definition: Chronic disease that persists for a long time. A diseases generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear. A diseases tend to become more common with age.
Eighty-eight percent of Americans over 65 years of age have at least one chronic health condition (as of 1998). Health damaging behaviors - particularly tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and poor eating habits - are major contributors to the leading chronic diseases.
Example of Chronic disease :
(c.) Data Mart :
Definition : A data mart is a structure specific to data warehouse environments, used to retrieve client-facing data. The data mart is a subset of the data warehouse and is usually oriented to a specific business line or team.
The sources could be internal operational systems, a central data warehouse, or external data.
Example of Data Mart are :
(d.) BI :
Definition : BI stand for Business Intelligence is a set of processes, architectures, and technologies that convert raw data into meaningful information that drives profitable business actions. It is a suite of software and services to transform data into actionable intelligence and knowledge.
Examples of BI are :
