Solution:

(a.) Acute care:

Definition : Acute care is a secondary health care unit where the patient receives active but temporary treatment for a serious injury or episode of illness, emergency medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. Acute care services are generally delivered by teams of health care professionals from a range of medical and surgical specialties.

Example of Acute care are:

  1. Ambulance Care Center
  2. End Stage Disease Center (dialysis center)
  3. Home Health Agency
  4. Hospital (General Acute Care as well as Psychiatric, Specialized and Rehabiltation Hospital; and Long Term Acute Care or LTAC)

(b.) ALOS :

Definition  :  ALOS  stands for Average Length of Stay that  represents the average number of days in a hospital for each admission, calculated by dividing the sum of inpatient days spent by the number of patient admissions with the same diagnosis-related group classification; can be used to predict a patient's expected length of stay.

formula :

Length of stay = date of discharge - date of admission

Average length of stay = Length of stay / Total number of discharges

Example of ALOS are:

Six patients admitted on a hospital named Rohan, Priya, Kumar, Mani. Rohan is admitted on 4th april 2013 and discharged on 10th april 2013. Priya is admitted on 2nd april 2013 and discharged on 13th april 2013. Kumar is admitted on 15th april 2013 and discharged on 20th april 2013. Mani is admiited on 22nd april 2013 and discharged on 30th april 2013

Length of stay = date of discharge - date of admission

LOS of Rohan = [(4-4-2013) - (10-4-2013)] = 6

LOS of Priya = [(2-4-2013) - (13-4-2013)] = 11

LOS of  Kumar = [(15-4-2013) - (20-4-2013)] = 5

LOS of Mani = [(22-4-2013) - (30-4-2013)] = 8

Total Length of stay = 6+11+5+8 =30 days

Average Length of Stay = Total length of stay / Total number of discharges

= 30/6

= 5 days
