what is the "blind spot bias"? How do you think that people could work to combat both the blind spot and implicit biases? As always, provide concrete examples.
Blind spot bias refers to one taking the sides of those who align with them the most without even realizing that one does so. Implicit bias is matching or choosing people and events that are close to one’s own stereotypical views without being aware of it. For example, when a white person chooses to rent a house, one may look for more white people in the neighborhood or when one would like to enrol for a program one may look for the religious, cultural or social sameness without even realizing that they do so. This would mean that they indirectly avoid those for whom they hold stereotypical views. One of the most important ways to eliminate blind spot bias or implicit bias is to develop open mindedness by treating everyone as equal and important. Overcoming one’s superiority complex is the key to build a better world view. Secondly, one could consciously choose to live and work with those about whom they hold stereotypical views. This would mean they should be open towards experience and exposure which would help them overcome their limited worldview. Finally, it’s all about identifying, accepting and adopting the best practices from other people that would help one to be very open.
