Millennials have strong core values of selflessness and teamwork. They hold high the ideals of collective leadership and empowerment of employees.
Consequently, they are not content to follow the legacy leadership style and while they do aspire to leadership roles, their preference is for a less hierarchical approach to leadership. Flat organizations with fewer layers of management, allowing individuals the freedom to explore, learn and grow, following non-traditional career paths is their idea of a successful business.
Rather than look upto someone with absolute power, millennials respect someone with traits of humility, openness and continual learning, who recognize both their strengths and weaknesses and demonstrate soft skills like emotional intelligence over technical expertise or domain knowledge. As leaders, they would like to be in constant touch with the challenges their employees face, and incorporate the insights and experience so gained into their decision making.
Millennial leaders also do not accept a policy just because it has been laid down. They expect employees at all levels to be ready to examine and modify policies that are not perceived as bringing sufficient value.
The companies built by millennials revolve around personal passion and social purpose, and give importance to personal aspects beyond the workplace and to connect company values to personal values. They prioritize the social value of an enterprise over its financial value.
In a post-Covid world with greater awareness of the impact of our actions on the society and the larger world around us, and the equal if not greater importance of ethical and environmental aspects over narrow financial ones, we can expect even greater visibility and absorption of these values, as expressed by millennial leaders and demonstrated by the new age entrepreneurs.
