Substance abuse and addiction in the family has a number of negative effects on young adults and their identity. They are seen to live in neglect and denial. They live with a feeling of lack of safety, and find themselves to be vulnurable to the addictions. They go through stress and strains to maintain the social status in front of their friends.
They testify of feeling hurt, sad, confused, hateful and shameful. They often talk about how they feel embarassed when they see their parents or other family members with their friends. To counter all these feelings, these young adults often turn to anger and anti-social behaviour.
Family members in any family are meant to be an inspiration to children and young adults on how to live a better life. But when these very people are addicted to alcohol and gambling, the young people many times tend to follow them. They live with an identity disorder, confused between what they are, and what they want their life to be.
