Maytag started building washing machines in Newton, Iowa in the year 1893, and the city with a population of 15000 prospered along with it. In 2007, the company closed operations and was bought out by Whirlpool, which moved its based outside of Newton, which rendered the 2000 odd people from the city unemployed.
However, things changed quickly as the community leaders were able to rope in a lot of new employers into Newton, Iowa by leveraging 3 things. The infrastructure of the city, the land and buildings available and the zealous workforce which the city has always harbored. The unemployment rate went down from 9.9% in 2009 to 3.5% in a matter of a couple of years.
The most prominent employer is an Arizona based company by the name of TPI Composites, which makes wind turbine blades. Currently at its Iowa plant the company produces 27 blades a week, which are 187 feet in length individually and 3 blades make up a set of turbine. In order to attract TPI, Newton offered tax incentives along with some abatements for new companies. In addition to all these, the state of Iowa also offered loans, grants and tax benefits worth $8 million to the company.
