Erickson believed that old age is a time during which we look back on our lives to reflect on what we have accomplished with the recognition that we are unable to really do things differently. Do you agree with Erickson's opinion? Why or why not? If you were to write your own obituary prior to your death during old age, what would you write?
I am in agreement with Erikson's opinion. I have observed that older adults tend to narrate plenty of stories about their lives, highlighting their achievements and at times, expressing regret over some of their choices. I base my opinion on the fact that my conversations with my grandparents always seem to steer towards them talking about their past experiences. However, I also feel that the tendency to reflect and recognize the inability to do things differently not only characterizes older adults but middle-aged adults as well. This feeling is a critical element of the so-called "midlife crisis". I have never seriously considered writing my own obituary prior to my death, but if I were to do so, it would be the lyrics of the song "A Tout Le Monde (Set Me Free)" by Megadeath:
Don't remember where I was
I realized life was a game
The more seriously I took things
The harder the rules became
I had no idea what it'd cost
My life passed before my eyes
When I found out how little I accomplished
All my plans denied
So as you read this know my friends
I'd love to stay with you all
Please smile when you think of me
My body's gone that's all
À tout le monde [To all the world]
À toutmes amis [To all my friends]
Jevous aime [I love you]
Jedois partir [I have to leave]
These are the last words
I'll ever speak
And they'll set me free
