Horney believed that much of our lives may be governed by the tyranny of the shoulds. Can you think of different types of "shoulds" that diverse cultures foster
The tyranny of the shoulds by Karen Horney is the neurotic need. The neurotic person's self is divided into two personalities one is the self and another one is idealized. A neurotic individual feels that his original self does not live up to his idealized self she described this phenomenon as the tyranny of the shoulds. The neurosis develops when a person suffers from psychic disturbances brought by the fear and his attempt to find a solution against these fears.
Henry (September 16, 1885 –December 4, 1952), was a psychoanalyst who believes that the development of neurosis is not entirely due to the conflict arising out of fear and its defenses. She says the culture and its value also effects and one develops neurotic feelings.
The different kinds of should start from the birth of the child, in Hindu culture having a boy is the sign of taking the generation further if a woman gives birth to a girl as her first baby, the family members always say she should have a first child as a boy. The culture where the male is dominant there are multiple should a female has to follow; she should look after the husband, children besides earning for the family if she is a working woman. A housewife should look after the whole family.
The diverse culture is the result of acknowledging, respecting and recognizing other's cultures. The cultural diversity is important because the people from all around the world are coming to the US bringing along with them their own culture. To avoid cultural shock one should recognize and adopt the other's culture to be a part of the society it brings a better understanding. collaboration and cooperation. So one should not envy other's culture, rather one should avoid cultural conflict.
