What landmarks distinguished European Christendom in the so-called “Age of Faith” and what role did the Roman Catholic Church play in the rise of medieval European culture? Focus on three landmarks and discuss them elaborately.
The Age of Faith starts from the fall of Eastern Roman empire and lasted till 1400 AD. Europe was almost in a mess with political uncertainty and class divisions. Christianity stepped in as the rescuer and played a major role in transforming Europe into what it is today. Although there were few dark sides of this period, it became the period of faith for the following three reasons.
Firstly, Christianity stepped in when there was lots of political and economic confusions by uniting people under Christian religion and treating people equally. They carried out Crusades in order to protect the Christian lands thus bringing in more unity in the name of the religion. Secondly, Popes started appointing the kings and involved in making the laws of the land and this involvement forced the kings to make laws in favour of the common people. Thirdly, the priests were comforting the common people by assuring an afterlife thus helped them endure the hardships of the present life. This helped the society maintain order and morality.
