Characteristics of WAN

• WAN(wide area network) is mainly used where there is a need of covering large geographical area. It may be a country, a continent or may be globally.
• It can transfer data or information in the form of image, audio and video using specific technology. By using this technology WAN transfers the data over a long distance between LANs and Man's.
• Compare to LAN and MAN, WAN can connected to large number of devices and also it can be scalable
• There's a room for sharing the regional resources like business, educational institutions can share data from different locations across the world through WANs.
• WANs has the ability to make connections between LAN and MAN to the Internet by providing Uplink services
• Communication links for WANs are given by some public services for example telephone networks, satellite and network providers etc.
• Due to high propagation dealy in WANs, the communication speed is low.
• Bit errors rate is usually high in WANs.

Uses of LANs

• The main advantage of LANs is speed they can reach. since it covers only small geographical area its possible to communicate with high speed
• The another major advantage is low cost. Because to set up a LAN, all you need is some ether net cables, network swith etc.
• The advancement in infrastructure of LANs to keep it running is less.
• We can also use Wi-Fi with standard ether net connections to make it available for any kind of device which are connected to LAN such as smart phone, PC etc.
• The sharing of software between the computers and other devices will reduce the cost. because of the software licensing we can't offer software for each and every computer. This kind of sharing is possible in LANs.
• The user no need to back up manually at every interval of time . It's all automatic.
