According to Erik Erikson, the central psychosocial issue in young adulthood is intimacy vs. isolation. What variables will determine whether or not a young adult is able to resolve this stage in favor of intimacy?

A person may find several difficulties in building relationships. These difficulties are being faced due to a fear. That fear may be related with intimacy. Fear of intimacy is nothing but a phobia which remains related with social premises.
This phobia creates a state of anxiety which may ruin the essences of any relationship. It also causes a dysfunctional state in relationship. It creates disturbances at different stages of life. When a person remain in the age group of 18-40 years then there remains a tendency to build intimate relationship.
A unexpected fear of of breaking trust may destroy the relationship. A person expects honesty and closeness from a relationship. Any damage to these parameters become responsible for damaging a relationship. This damage may take place due to unrealistic expectation in different conditions of life.
A crisis of identity also becomes responsible for ruining a relation. If a person is finding himself/herself unable in creating a balance among different aspects of life then it proves to be biggest anarchy in building a healthy relationship.
A state of confusion also destroys the well state of a relationship. When we feel a sense of fear about our weakness then also we avoid going closer to someone. Anger, shame and grief are some other reasons which can destroy a well maintained relation.
