Service is something which is intangible , it can be defined as a transaction without buying or selling of goods. Examples of service are :- Treatment provided by a doctor, banking operations, maintenance etc.

Development on the other hand simply means modification or making of something. Putting it together, service development means development of a service.In other words, service development is a process of developing or creating a service for customers.

The need for service development arises when one service is to be efficient. For example, a particular service is provided to customers but suddenly the seller realise that there is some modifications or additions required to make the particular service efficient and ends ups in finding ways to do modifications.

Reasons for service development:

1) Addition to existing service: When a service provided is required some addition in order to attract more customers or say to make life time customers. For example, earlier banking services were only accessible at bank ie; had to be present as a person but with modernisation , now banking services are available at one touch.

2) Modifications to existing service : When a service provided is required to be modified or changed . Lets take the previous example : Bank has intoduced net banking services but finds a lot of bugs in the application developed, they set a team and fix the bugs and it helps in providing better services.

3) To increase efficiency : When a need to increase efficiency or ability or performance of a service arises. In order to increase efficiency, service development is to be done.

4) Need to introduce new service in market: When a new service needs ro be introduced considering new choice and lifestuyle of customers, service development is to be done

5) Growth and Expansion: When a service based company focuses on how to achieve growth and expand the current business, service development is done.

6) Part of goal achievement: When the company is goal oriented and make each steps keeping in mind the same , need to do service development.

7) Survive in Market : In order to rise high in market, service development is essential.

8) Face competitors: To face both same industry and different industry line customers, service development is required.

In short, service development is an integral part of service based industry , where in the company strives by modifying its services to provide better things to its end customers.
