what is the efficacy of the RO reclamation process in terms of removal efficiencies for the related water quality parameters;
ANS: During chlorination, the natural organic matter present in water reacts with chlorine and leads to the formation of trihalomethanes(THM). Trihalomethanes are known for their carcinogenic characteristics. Removal of THM from the source water, therefore, is an important task in the water purification process. With the aim of removal of THM and its precursor natural organic matter from the water, a study of reverse osmosis process is done.
Reverse Osmosis works by using a high pressure pump to increase the pressure on the salt side of the RO and force the water across the semi-permeable RO membrane, leaving almost all of dissolved salts behind in the reject stream. Drinking water dosed with chlorine or an alternative disinfectant, chlorine dioxide, was passed through a micro filter, an activated carbon filter and a reverse osmosis membrane. The RO membrane removed approx 83% of THM from the drinking water source.An RO membrane rejects contaminants based on their size and charge. Any contaminant that has a molecular weight greater than 200 is likely rejected by a properly running RO system. Likewise, the greater the ionic charge of the contaminant, the more likely it will be unable to pass through the RO membrane.
RO system employs cross filtration rather than standard filtration. With cross filtration, the solution passes through the filter, or crosses the filter, with two outlets: the filtered water goes one way and the contaminated water goes another way.
plz give thumbs up
