Denitrification is commonly accomplished as a separate process after carbonaceous BOD removal. An alternative is to recycle mixed liquor to an anaerobic stage at the head end of the aeration tank. What potential advantage does the alternative offer? Explain.
The activated sludge process is mainly depends upon the organic waste present in the waste water and micro organism present in waste water i.e F/M ratio Food to micro organism ratio (as food of the micro organism is organic waste). This mixture of micro organism and waste water is called mixed liquor.
As food of the micro organism is organic waste, this mixed liquor have to stay for a certain time for growing of micro organism..This certain time is called "mean cell resistance time (MCRT)".
The sludge when it is collected from the secondry sediment tank, the sludge contains active micro organism in it, so that's why it is called activated sludge.
85% of the sludge is disposed off for the sludge digestion and remaining of the sludge is recycled to the aeration tank for the further decomposition of the organic waste present in the secondry sedimentation tank( this is called return activated sludge), as the collected sludge have all the active micro organisms and there is no need to give any micro organism from outside and this micro organism may increse in their numbers after getting sufficient oxygen from the aeration tank and again further reduces the organic waste and BOD of the wastewater. This is why the alternative offer has the potential advantages.
