We mentioned that IP packets are forwarded hop-by-hop. How do you know how many
hops are there if you ping 8.8.8.8? What does the traceroute command do? How does this
command work? Can you explain how it works using the output of the traceroute command
generated on your machine?

Expert Solution

  • Tracert known as trace route gives the details of number of hops that took place to reach a particular ip address or domain.
  • tracert is the command that is used to find the traceroute of a particular ip address or domain name

  • First of all tracert is the command that gives the details of the path that the packet moves from our system address to the destination address that we have given.
  • It gives the route that it took to reach to that particular destination (given ip address) from our system.
  • From our tracert example we can say that it took around 9 hops to reach to the destination address
  • Here hop in the sense it's like a jump like it is a path that which reaches the number of routers on its way to reach the destination.
  • For example consider a path where We need to move from Location A to Location D We start at Location A and in between there are two more stops like B and C we stop at B and again we move forward and meet the location C and from C we move to our final destination D. Here the path A->B->C->D that is it took 3 jumps like from A to B, B to C, C to D that mean it took 3 hops to reach from A to D.
  • Here first hop started from my ipv4 address(obviously it should start from there cause it is the source ip address) and then it reached to the ip 49.204.160.1 and later it moved to another ip which is near to it .
  • Like wise the network fetches the ip's and gets connected to one by one these are referred as hops the jumps that it took to reach the destination.
