Congratulations! You have just become the safety manager for Podunk University. Your position is at the campus in Podunk, Colorado, and your predecessor left the job a year and a half ago. There has been nobody in the position during that interval. The commitment of the institution to safety is dubious at best, but, well, you needed a job, so here you are.
After introducing yourself to the secretary who also supports a half dozen more senior people, you decide to focus on hazardous material and hazardous waste issues since you just completed a great college course on those topics. You tour the campus and discover that the following departments and programs are your responsibility:
With the thought of developing a plan to ensure workplace compliance with hazard material management standards and recommending actions needed to implement an effective workplace hazardous materials management program, respond to each of the questions below.
After a tough 5 years, you have the Podunk University campus running smoothly, everybody is trained, and your successor will not have nearly as much of a challenge as you did. Congratulations, and best wishes on your next challenge!
Your submission must be a minimum of five pages in length, be double-spaced, and be in compliance with APA style. Support your answers to the questions with appropriate in-text citations, corresponding references, and a thorough analysis with strong arguments. You must use at least two references, one of which may be the textbook. The title and reference pages do not count toward meeting the minimum page length requirement.
Where do you start?
As a safety manager at Podunk University, the priority of the University is to ensure that both students and staffs are in a healthy environment free from hazardous materials that are likely to cause interference with the student’s study and staff activities within the campus and the surroundings. Physics department will be first place to start with due to the high voltage wastes in the department. The University is focused towards ensuring there is effective learning in a clean and healthy environment that is environmental friendly .
Hazardous waste materials are basically wastes that are very harmful and dangerous to human health and to the environments as well. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), OSHA and HCS, Hazardous materials are characterized by Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity and Toxicity. The mismanagement of these waste materials can lead to a fatal health impact which might be long term or short term impact. The materials if not handled well can also lead to Environmental Pollution and this will cause a great negative Impact to both animals and plants leading to loss of biodiversity and imbalance in nature.
Human Health is a very crucial factor that needs a serious attention and poor management of Hazardous waste has a fatal health impact such as causing diseases and even death to both fauna and flora. Effective training of all staffs and students is the first thing to be done. The management from all departments must be trained to create awareness that they are already exposed to hazardous waste material and there is urgency to ensure that there is effective hazardous waste management. The second thing is start hazardous waste management in all departments and sectors within the University that are most affected and are at risk to both human and animal health as well to the Environment. I will start with the physics department due to fact that the high voltage is so dangerous to human health.
Where should you focus your initial HazCom efforts? In what order do you tackle the rest of the departments?
The University in Compliance with the accompanying necessities will help the University's Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) in guaranteeing the proper management of specific hazardous materials or of perilous chemicals. The physics department and automotive technology department have extreme threats to human life and will the best place to start with. After the two departments, I will definitely the following departments consecutively as shown below.
What are the HazCom issues in the automotive technology department?
Automotive Technology Department in Relation to HCS and HazCom issues are likely to have these issues.The automotive technology department has everything pertaining to auto repair, including solvents, asbestos brake linings, pneumatic tools, waste oil, and cutting and grinding tools. The Hazcom issues in this department are the waste pieces of metals and waste oil from the automotive engines.
What are the hazardous waste issues in the automotive technology department?
Hazardous waste from numerous automotive engines procedures incorporate solvents, for example, methylene chloride, a likely cancer-causing agent that is ordinarily utilized as a part of paint removers. Trichloroethylene, a dissolvable that has been found in groundwater is checked and directed in savoring water the United States. The hazardous waste issues in the automotive technology department are;
What are the HazCom issues in the chemistry department?
The chemistry department has chemicals that have never been inventoried and a new forensics program. The Hazcom issues in this department could be;
What are the hazardous waste issues in the chemistry department?
With the Massive Arena renovation, who are the people to whom you need to communicate hazards?
The populations who need to be informed about the massive arena innovation are the students, staffs and workers within the University arena. Hazardous Communication must be carried out in an effective manner for the saltiness of the University community.
What are your main concerns with the physics department?
The department is equipped with very fragile, expensive and high voltage equipments that needs care all the times. The high voltage equipments if not handled with care may lead to fatal accidents or even death in the laboratory.
What are the hazardous material/waste spill response issues for the university, and how should you prepare for them
The University is so concerned with the hazardous materials or spill and there should be proper disposal of these wastes to avoid any possible harm to the environment and the biodiversity as a whole. The spills should be treated before disposal and must be disposed safely to avoid any possible harm.
Is any HazCom training needed for the English and math departments?
The English department should be trained and they should adhere to HazCom training due to the dangers that are likely to be posed by the waste papers. The waste papers should be disposed well and in case of fire outbreak, the department must be ready to respond effectively. Maths department has practical equipments and computers that are very expensive and must be handled with care to avoid breakages and any possible accidents.
What are some resources for finding out how to solve the HazCom issues?
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labour, there should be proper labeling of chemicals and maintenance of all material data sheets.
You must choose technology or trainers to do the needed training. What are some issues to consider when selecting these?
Due to budget cuts, you have to do the training yourself, and you will use PowerPoint. What are some considerations when developing your PowerPoint Presentation?
How can you evaluate your training to ensure that it is accomplishing your goals?
One of the chemistry professors working with some of the automotive technology faculty members invents a new nonflammable compound that will render obsolete the need for solvents to degrease auto parts. She wants to market the stuff. What needs to be done before it can be marketed, and who should do it?
The product is assumed to be a property of the university and the professor who invented the technology must give possible safety data sheet, label the product and lastly give the precaution that are likely to be taken in case of emergencies. The compound should be environmental friendly and very efficient.
The University decides to partner with the chemistry professor and market this new compound. Due to the lack of flammability, it is a great hit nationwide. They then decide to market it worldwide. What concerns need to be addressed?
The product must be labeled in accordance to the International hazardous safety regulation.
It turns out that this wonderful new compound makes a really great explosion when used in conjunction with another chemical. As the University is manufacturing the compound in large quantities and storing it on the grounds, what concerns do you now have? What experts should you consult?
The University should come up with appropriate safety measures to reduce the reaction of the product with other chemical to avoid explosion. The product must be tested under several testing cycles. The Professor who invented the compound must be widely consulted as well as other chemists experts.
The biology department has been busy as well. The little microbiology lab is large now, and they are working with stronger pathogens. How would you determine the new hazard communication requirements and things that you should do beyond that minimum?
The security on the Biology department must be enhanced due to the present of strong pathogens in the laboratory. Hazardous Communication should be introduced in the Biology department for safety measures. The characteristics of the pathogens must be identified from a consistent source and all the containers that have the pathogens and other chemicals must be well labeled to avoid confusion. The precaution measures should also be labeled for the sake safety to the students in the laboratory.
