consider how cellular respiration and photosynthesis are interconnected. thoroughly describe how the processes are similar and different. be sure to include any energy carriers, related enzymes, similar reactants/products etc. you may wish to include a diagram to organize your answers.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Similarities between cellular respiration and photosynthesis:

  • Both are reduction oxidation reactions
  • Both synthesize as well as utilize ATP
  • Both carry out phosphorylation reactions
  • Both utilise electron transport chain

Differences between cellular respiration and photosynthesis:

  • Cellular respiration releases energy while photosynthesis captures energy.
  • Cellular respiration involves breakdown of glucose (catabolic process) while photosynthesis involves production of glucose(anabolic process).
  • Source of energy in cellualr respiration is glucose while in photosynthesis, source of energy is sunlight.
  • Cellular respiration takes place in mitochondria while photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts of plants.
  • In cellular respiration, reactants are glucose and oxygen while in photosynthesis, reactants are light energy, carbon dioxide and water.
  • In cellular respiration electron carriers are NADH and FADH2 while in photosynthesis, electron carrier is NADPH.
  • Stages of cellular respiration are : glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, krebs cycle and ETC while in photosynthesis, the stages are light dependent reactions and calvin cycle.
  • Products of cellular respiration are carbon dioxide and water while in photosynthesis , it is glucose and oxygen.
