What are the similarities and differences between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

What are the similarities and differences between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:

Similarities between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration:

  • Both photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are metabolic process that use Electron Transport Chain (ETC)
  • Both cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis process have an ATP synthase enzyme, both cellular respiration and photosynthesis process use and produce ATP during reactions.
  • Both processes use the same coenzymes, such as NAD and NADP.

Differences between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration:

  • Photosynthesis process involves the production of food by plants using Carbon Dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll pigment. Cellular Respiration on the other hand is the process by which food is burnt in the presence of oxygen to release energy. Therefore, Photosynthesis is an anabolic process whereas cellular respiration is a catabolic process.
  • Photosynthesis takes place on the plant cells that contain the pigment chlorophyll and some photosynthetic bacteria whereas Respiration takes place in every plant and animal cells.
  • During Photosynthesis energy is stored wheras during Cellular Respiration energy is released.
  • During the process of Photosynthesis oxygen is released as a waste product whereas during Cellulare Respiration oxygen is consumed.
  • Photosynthesis process requires light wheras cellular respiration can occur in both light and dark conditions.
