The big 5 personality traits are based on the following 5
characteristics:
- Openness: I do believe that I am an open
individual who believes that learning is an ongoing process. Being
an introvert, keen observer of the occurrences around me, I feel
responsible for my own actions, including my growth and
development. Moreover, openness is a trait that I would always like
to possess since getting rid of the primitive understanding and
adapting oneself to what is new and more applicable is a part of
evolution as well.
- Conscientiousness: I do believe that I operate
high on this domain since I tend to spend more time on planning and
preparing, scheduling and detailing of the tasks that I am at.
- Extraversion: I operate low on this component
since I like to keep to myself and derive my energy from within
rather than external resources. I do not enjoy meeting people or
interacting with them and primarily like to be alone, reading a
book or just listening to music. A day that involves too much
reciprocal interaction with others teds to be draining for me.
- Agreeableness: Agreeableness relates to how
much interest one takes in others and their well-being or displays
empathy. Being a mental health professional and on a personal level
as well, I operate high on this domain since the well-being of
others is of primary importance to me. Contributing to the
happiness of others is the source of true contentment for me and a
job that lacks this aspect, will never provide satisfaction to
me.
- Neuroticism: I operate low on this domain of
personality since I do not feel emotionally stressed or perturbed
too often. Although there are times that I experience ‘negative’
emotions, they do not last long and tend to fade away with time and
effort
