A. What did the exercise reveal to you about yourself? Where you surprised about what you learned or was this something you already knew about yourself?
B. Do you tend to maintain the same orientation most of the time or are there occasions in which you change from one orientation to another?
C. What were your thoughts on the video? Point out something Louise Evans said that was of interest to you.
I think most part of the speech is true to me because I approach people with assumptions and initial physical judgement thus making the communication process difficult. I learnt that I should never judge a book by its cover. Sometimes, I don’t think from other’s point of view thus making mistakes and not listening to them properly.
Sometimes, I feel that I should be more open and acceptable to different people. I try this with people from different backgrounds and I have learnt that people are different and they are also good. They have their own perspectives, beliefs and practices depending on where they had grown. So, this orientation keeps changing and it’s not permanent.
Louise Evans is right in saying that when things don’t happen to our expectation, we don’t take time to understand the other person but we start to blame them. If we take some time to wait and observe more closely, just like the other person checking the iphone for information about the Jazz orchestra, we will be able to understand that they are doing something important as well. The five chairs with attack, self-doubt, wait, detect and connect concepts to explain about the importance of active listening, looking things from other people’s point of view, showing empathy and communicate effectively are well explained. The final chair connect is to understand others and become more tolerant in understanding them is also well established.
