Delegation is defined as the transfer of responsibility for a specific nursing activity in a specific situation to a member of the nursing deemed competent to perform the activity, nurse delegates remains accountability for the performance of the activity and client outcome.

There are are some steps of delegation process:-

  1. Assessment and planning
  • Degree of urgency complixity e and stability of client problem.
  • Ability of team member to perform activity includes Nurse Practice Act ,organisation policies and procedures, individuals education and experience.
  • There are five rights of delegation
  1. Right situation
  2. Right task
  3. Right direction and communication
  4. Right person
  5. Right supervision and evaluation

  • Specific activities and guidelines for performance and reporting are communicated to team member
  • Team member understands and accepts responsibility for delegated activity.

3. Supervision is the most important step in delegation such as type and frequency determined by stability of client complexity of activity and ability of team member.

4. Evaluation:-continuous process to determine effectiveness of delegation in achievement of desired client outcome and identification of opportunities for improvement and also increase the safety of the patient.
