• A non sequitur is a comment that has no relevance or context to the preceding conversation.
• A red herring is an attempt to shift debate away from the issue that is the topic of an argument. Basically, a red herring is an objection to a position that doesn't address the actual issue being debated. Its premises are irrelevant to the conclusion it seeks to negate/oppose.Mystery novels almost always have a few red herrings so they can surprise you in the end.
  
• A non sequitir, as the translated name suggests, is something that doesn’t follow – it’s out of the blue, out of sequence.
• A statement that is labeled a non sequitur is one that is illogical. For example, if someone asks what it's like outside and you reply, "It's 2:00," you've just used a non-sequitur, or made a statement that does not follow what was being discussed.
