Here are the suggestions and comments I would have for the
manager if I was serving as a communication consultant:
- It is important for the manager to have a clear understanding
and communication for al;l the desired changes in the
organisation.
- It is important to clearly communicate the vision,
defining why is the company in the particular product/service
category and also need to communicate what needs to be
done to achieve the desired state.
- Effective communication of vision and tasks by managers can
lead to a shared vision creation and people are able to synergies
well & also have bigger organisational commitment.
- As a communication consultant, it is important to tell
the manager to have clear accountability at all levels.
lack of accountability makes the entire process aimless leading to
return to the old habits. Hence it is important to ensure
accountability until the process is closed. The accountability
across all levels ensures that vision, mission and any change is
accepted throughout the organisation.
- Another important aspect as part of communication
is to have an open mind while dealing with people - A
manager should not be critical of others. He/She must understand
and analyse the opinion of others and should be willing to modify
his/her decision on the basis of that. The person who is not open
to new ideas and follows strict procedures will not be effective in
leading organisations or bringing adjustments to
strategies.
- The policies, rules and other procedures must be clearly
communicated. Setting the standard and communicating them
effectively helps to reduce the
overall clutter and
increase the efficiency of the organisation.
As a consultant, it is important for the manager to understand
both aspects of communication and use the appropriate one depending
on the situation and task at hand.
- The interactive form of communication involves
engaging all members and stakeholders sop that response is
co-created and such method also helps to understand the body
language and mood of the room.
- The push form of communication is shared
without taking feedback from others. If you want to use press
releases or internal notice board for giving important
information.
The manager needs to understand this and apply the form of
communication depending on the situation. For example - a
grievance or customer feedback the manager needs to use interactive
communication. For disciplinary policies and violations push
communication would be an effective medium.
