Do you think certain cultures are privileged in their environments, such as in schools or their communities? What are some of the cultural privileges or disadvantages in your own life? ( Read the article "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," Peggy McIntosh discusses the concept of unearned privileges)
It’s always about the majority that has the upper hand in deciding how the society would function and who gets what. Being born in some of the cultures, definitely has some advantages in the society. If we look at the White people in America, they get all the benefits, they have all the freedom and they even have an edge over others in getting a job. The institutionalized racism that systematically neglects other races and cultures from housing, medical and employment opportunities is practiced in the U.S. today. Being a person from the popular culture in the country, one could walk freely without being intimidated by any other factor, get enough social security and live a happy life. These privileges, according to Peggy are unearned because they are inherited with the color of their skin and the race they belong to just like inheriting wealth from one's father.
