Internet protocol television (IPTV)
- * It means television programming is communicating using
Internet protocol.
- * It can receive and display coded videos as stream of packets.
And it can combine with other application.
- * It has ability to stream the source media continously.
- * It allows the user to pick the program they want to watch
whenever and wherever they feel like watching it apart from tuning
into any Live TV shows that are being aired currently.
Difference between IPTV and usual TV:
- * In TV(using cable or satellite TV) , we can only see what is
broadcasted(we can only watch what is available). But in IPTV,
Instead of transmitting content videos like pulses in fibre optic
cables or radio waves from a satellite, IPTV senses movies or shows
or any program using standard internet connection.
- * IPTV have ability to store the programs at server at the
transmitting end , which allows the viewers to ask for the contents
any time they wish.
Working of IPTV :
- * IPTV is similar to browsing the internet . It merely uses
internet protocol(IP). IP is a transport protocol that deliver
videos to the viewers. The user clicks the program or video they
wish to watch. When they requests for the video, the video from
different servers is divided into somany data packets. These
packets will be send over the internet. Video server transmits
programs through fibre optic cables to the household through
internet connection .
There are various IPTV formats. Some of the important ones are
given below:
- * Video on demand (VOD) : Here , Individual delivery of video
content to a particular subscriber. VOD allows the user to watch
any program from VOD's server library. We inform the server what we
want to watch and they send the requested video to us through
internet. Examples for VOD includes Netflix, Primevideo, hulu
etc.
- * Time-shifted media : Time shifted TV allows subscribers to
view live broadcasts(live programs) later and they can resume their
program according to their convinience. Some of the most popular
services that offers these format includes BBC and iPlayer
- * Live television: Here we can watch live programs(sports) on
TV. Examples includes FOX SPORTS GO and hulu TV .
- * TV on demand(TVoD) : Here, certain selected channels are
saved(recorded). So that the user can watch it any time. Examples
includes Google play and iTunes.
- * Near video on demand : It is meant for multiple users who is
subscribed to nVOD service. This is a pay-per-view service.
Example for architecture of IPTV:
- * Central source collects the broadcasted contents from the
local antenna and satellites.
- * The video or channel which has been requested by the user is
delivered to the user through delivery networks . These delivery
network consists of robust internet uplink through fiber optics
from the IPTV broadcasters end.
- * The user will receive this signal at their end through their
internet.
- * A set top box(STB) is provided to the user , if they are
subscribed to a particular IPTV service. It uses the
internet to deliver the video and TV content to the user.
- * When the viewer requests a TV channel or video
through an interactive portal in the STB, It allows the
viewer to navigate within the different IPTV services.
