Standards may be defined as "The benchmarks/milestones of achievement which are totally based on a desired level of excellence in a certain profession, here the nursing. Hence the Nursing Standards are defined as all the standards of practice which offer a comprehensive guide to the knowledge, skills, judgment as well as attitudes as per the prospects of practicing safely.

The American Nurses Association has the massive responsibility to set the scopes & standards of practice and enforcing well established practices for all professional nurses.
