Setting standards in Nursing helps to deliver quality care to the patient. Standards are set of practices, principles and protocol assembled to provide a uniformity of care. These set a guideline to the nurses to function at its best. This helps to maintain a healthy therapeutic nurse-patient relationship while preserving the confidentiality of the patient and developing trust between the two parties.

there are few reasons that show why nursing standards of practice are important, they are

1. The standards provide guidance towards, skill, judgement, and an attitude which is needed for the safety of the patient.

Patient care is not only based on the scientific approach towards a disease. But it also needs a nurse to have critical thinking and skilful judgement when to comes to patient safety. Having set standards helps the nurses to assess self and measure the standard of care which they are delivering to the patient. An optimistic and empathetic attitude, helps a nurse to understand the need of the patient better.

2. Setting standards help to challenge nurses in upgrading their skills

This helps the nurse to understand what expectations are to be delivered to the patient, creating a professional benchmark delivering quality service to the patient which results in good feedback from the client. Critical thinking, which helps in reaching for the clinical judgement, aiming for the best benefit for the client is done based on scientific knowledge and established criteria. This enables the nurse to upgrade their knowledge and skill in participating in continuing nurses education, seminars and team meetings.

3. Uniformity in care

Without the set standards, the nurses may work as per own wish, which may not be helpful for the patient. Certain measures such as following disciplines, ethics, recording and reporting, which are essential in standard nursing care alter and results in a medication error, patient injury and more. Setting up of professional standards provides an outline to the nurse and to the patient regarding what to expect from the health center.

Professional standards contributes towards the integrity of the profession, enabling the nurse to function to its fullest delivering quality care, ensuring safety and client satisfaction along with receiving self-satisfaction to the nurse.
