Do you think Romanticism in the arts is cause or a reflection of the late 18th and early 19th century revolutions?
Romanticism, inspired by the French Revolution, was a reaction to the Age of Enlightenment's scientific rationalism and classicism. Romanticism was an artistic, literary and intellectual movement that emerged at the end of the 18th century in Europe. In the estimated time from 1800 CE to 1840 CE, the revolution was at its peak in most regions. Past moral and classical ideal models, romanticism went to elevate a resurrected medievalism.
While the advent of Romanticism in French art was hindered by the keeping of Neoclassicism on the academies, during the Napoleonic era it became increasingly popular. His initial medium was the paintings of history which acted as propaganda for the new regime. The main generation of French Romantics born between 1795–1805, conceived between wars, attended drum rolling college. "The French Revolution, accompanied by the Napoleonic Wars until 1815, meant that war, and the ensuing political and social instability served as the backdrop for Romanticism.
The French Revolution's values provided the framework from which
Romanticism as well as Counter-Enlightenment arose.
Romanticism was a revolt against the Age of Enlightenment's
aristocratic social and political norms and also a reaction against
nature's scientific rationalization.
Romanticism legitimized the imagination of the artist as a vital
authority, enabling liberation in art from classical notions of
form. Romanticism was also inspired by the Industrial Revolution,
which was partially about freedom from industrial realities.
Sturm und Drang, a German counter-enlightenment movement that
emphasized subjectivity and intense emotion, also inspired
romanticism.
