Do research to identify the three leading electronic health record (EHR) systems. Go on social media and find comments from the users of these systems. If you were leading a project team to select an EHR system for a large hospital, which one would you choose? Why?
Electronic health record (EHR) systems:
A digital version of the patient's paper chart is an electronic health record (EHR). EHRs are patient-centric, real-time documents that provide approved users with information immediately and safely. While an EHR does include medical history of treatment and therapy, an EHR program is built to go beyond traditional clinical data collected in the hospital and may provide a broader viewpoint on patient care.
EHRs typically include Medical history, laboratory results, allergies and even billing information to help create a more streamlined process for patient care.
Generally, all EHRs fall into two broad categories. These are server based and cloud based.
Server based means the records are stored on a server local to your network. Everything is kept in house on your own hardware.
Cloud based is where the program and records are stored on a remote server operated by a third party vendor.
Below is a list of the three leading EHR systems in practice:
1. EPIC
2. CERNER
3. CARECLOUD
EPIC: Epic has been in the Health IT market for almost 50 years. Epic is a cloud-based EHR solution catering to a number of specialties. The software is in use across a broad range of practices, from community hospitals and independent practices to multi-specialty hospital groups and hospice care providers
Comment:
I. Best program for pharmacy operations currently available
II. As a medical assistant, the Care Gaps are super helpful to me. I like that the program tells me what the patients are due for, so I can discuss it with them before they see the provider. I also like how information is shared across offices that utilize Epic. It makes it easier if the patient is seen elsewhere that utilizes Epic.
III. My favorite features include the easy verification process and access to the EHR all in one space. I also like how customizable Epic is to fit the user.
IV. EPIC is great software, but has a steep learning curve and the search bar tool is very helpful for navigating through the charts when information is difficult to find.
CERNER: Cerner is currently the leading supplier of Health IT solutions and are the largest provider of systems for inpatient care. Clinical Data such as vitals etc are presented in easily identifiable sections. It is fair, flexible and once accustomed to it is relatively efficient when used. The learning period involved can be lengthy to achieve full proficiency. At least all health records are in one easily accessed place.
Comments:
I. Very user-friendly and customizable.
II. Cerner Behavior Health/Millennium is not up to par with other Behavior Health EHRs "
III. The billing module is very difficult for my organization to use as we work with a variety of both commercial and state PMAP/Medicare/Medical Assistance payors. We have to use a 3rd party clearing house and the Cerner product requires a lot of manual editing and managing of claims that might be rejected due to non-clinical reasons.
IV. A detailed method for creating patient electronic medical record.
CARECLOUD: Innovative cloud-based practice management and EHR software, revenue cycle management and patient engagement. It helps practices boost efficiency and bring in more revenue. Its seamless integration with Charts, EHR, and Community, patient portal, enables practices to achieve an even higher level of efficiency.
Comments:
I. I love how easy it is to schedule our clients.
II. Efficient software, Helpful to connect with staff. The network increases collaboration.
III. Customization setup portion can be a bit clunky, but it eventually works. Would be nice to have even more customization ability for very particular field sets.
IV. Customer service still has not arranged for training for new staff nearly a month after the request was made.
In a nutshell:
As a lead of project team to select an EHR system for a large hospital, I would like to prefer for a system which has low breakdowns and user friendly.
That’s why I prefer EPIC as the best system to maintain the data and Self host, cloud host, or dual hosted options, Dedicated and Flexible workflows.
For the tenth straight year, Epic Systems was awarded the top overall software suite in the 2020 Best in KLAS health IT rankings. Overall, Epic earned eight awards; including top overall physician practice vendor. The industry giant also won category leader awards in four separate segments.
