Explain how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are opposite reactions. Do they have opposite consequences? Explain.

2. "Energy from the sun is the basis of every food chain on earth." Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Yes photosynthesis and cellular respiration are just the opposite reactions , in photosynthesis ,glucose is prepared by the plants, whereas in respiration glucose is broken down to release carbondioxide.

Photosynthesis takes place in plants in presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, in photosynthesis carbon dioxide combine with water to form glucose and oxygen. This oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Cellular respiration takes place in every cell of the organism, in respiration glucose along with oxygen combine to form carbon dioxide and water.

Glucose breaks into carbon dioxide and water. Moreover it is a metabolic process which converts biochemical energy into energy releasing compounds like ATP.

They both are opposite because photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from atmosphere whereas respiration puts back carbon dioxide into atmosphere.

Photosynthesis is different in different type of plants, it involves Calvin pathway in c3 type of plants and c4 pathway in c4 type of plants.

Respiration involves glycolysis , kreb's cycle in eukaryotes and fermentation in prokaryotes.

Carbohydrates, proteins , release 4 kcal /gram, and fats release 9kcal/gram.

2) Yes, Energy from sun is basis of every food chain on earth because, the energy from sun is utilised by plants to produce glucose. Herbivores consume plants where the energy is transferred to them, and carnivores consume herbivores. In this way the energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next.
