I would propose that the pruning process should be the teacher? Right? Is pruning similar to back-propagation? I believe both are relying on trial and error.

Is the role of the teacher only limited to return pathways in the brain?

Yes it should be the teacher because the brain knows what to prun away and what to keep and it depends upon the environmental factor also. The way we learn and our environmetal evolution defines the neural connection iunour brain in what way it would be organised asa per our requirement.
The synaptic pruning process is a part of the back propagation learning process.
Every learning process is a trial and error method and it takes time and changes with the requirement so it can be said so. It is on the basis which the artificial intelligence is being developed and the machine learning process also. Trial and error process is a part of adaptation andf learning.
It is not to return the pathways but it is to make the pathway distinct without any obsolete in that which the pruning away comes into play.
