Answer.

In organisational Psychology, the work of French and Raven (1959) is crucial to understanding organisational communication as they theorised that leadership and power are closely linked. different forms of power are analysed to affect one's leadership and success. throughout the workforce, power is divided into five separate and distinct forms. They identified those five bases of power as coercive, reward, legitimate, referent, and expert. Leadership styles vary along these bases in terms of their use of a particular type of power. For instance, a coercive leader is one who uses the threat of force to gain compliance from another. This type of power is based upon the idea of coercion: that someone is forced to do something that he/she does not desire to do and it may not always be recognized by the target of influence. Such a leader is not likely to acquire legitimacy in gaining influence nor does s/he seek validation from the followers. Instead, s/he may claim all expertise, generally use punitive behavior rather than contingent reward behavior. These type of leaders rely on the use of threats in their leadership style. Finally, with respect to the reverent base, a coercive leader is less likely to rely on the affiliations in the groups and organizations to which the members belong in order to gain influence as s/he is more likely to use threats and attacks to influence the target of his/her power.
