in a certain operation 3.54*104 kg of Ticl4 is reacted with 1.13*104 kg of Mg

A) Calculate the theoretial yield of titanium , Ti in kilograms.

B ) Calculate the percent yield if 7.91*103 kg of Ti is actually obtained

(Ti : 47.88 , Mg: 24,3, Cl; 35.5)

Help please with explain every thing :)

Solutions

Expert Solution

A. Mass of TiCl4=3.54*104 kg

                Moles of TiCl4=3.54*104/189.88=186.433 kmol

                Moles of Mg=1.13*104/24.3=465.02 kmol

                Reaction occurring is:

                TiCl4 +2Mg =2MgCl2 +Ti

As moles of Mg> 2*moles of TiCl4 hence TiCl4 is limiting reagent.

Moles of Ti produced=Moles of TiCl4=186.433 kmol

                Theoretical yield of Ti= 47.88*186.433=8926.3 kg=8.9263*103 kg

B. Percent yield=(Actual yield/Theoretical yield)*100

                                =(7.91*103/8.9263*103)100=88.7%
