Contrast how the activity of the liver enzyme is altered in the following physiological states: (1) After a heavy meal. (2) After you have run half a mile. (3) After you have not eaten for 3 days. Does the activity of the muscle phosphorylase differ under these conditions?

Solutions

Expert Solution

# Glycgen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase are the two major enzymes involve in the homeostasis of the carbohydrate metabolism.

(1) After a heavy meal

Due to the abundant amount of glucose in blood after a meal, the excessive amount of glucose will be coverted into glycogen and stored into liver. This process is catalysed by the enzyme glycogen synthase. Glycogen(muscle) phosphorylase will get inactivated at this time.

(2) After you have run half a mile

Due to the over expenditure of calorie while running, the existed glucose would have been spent in the blood. Then glycogen phosphorylates will get activated to release the reserved glycogen.

(3) After you have not eaten for three days

Three days of fasting must have cleared all the reserved glycogen from the liver and muscle by activating Glycogen/Muscle phosphorylase. Then body will continue to take lipid and proteins for further energy needs.

Glycogen and Fatty Acids are used to store energy. Describe and contrast the physiological states that would result in breakdown vs. those that would favor synthesis of these energy stores (include what is going on in different organs). Glycogen can be synthesized from, or broken down to Glucose 1P. Similarly, Fatty acids can be synthesized from, or broken down to Acetyl CoA. Explain why, in each case, both the breakdown and synthesis pathways are energetically favorable. You do not need...

Borderline Personality Disorder: Pathophysiology: has to do with how the disease has altered the normal physiological process of the body. To understand this you must first know what the normal anatomy and physiology of a body part or body system is. Next, determine how the disease has altered that. Also explain in terms the patient you are caring for can understand. Expected Symptoms: What symptoms might be present in this disorder? Which do you actually see? Place in Parentheses “A”...
