Discuss at least three of the neurobiological findings that indicate that schizophrenia is a brain disorder, and the nurses' role in caring for patients with this disorder
Neurobiological findings indicating schizophrenia as a brain disorder
1.Dopamine Theory
Dopamine Theory states that increased levels of dopamine function in the brain are proportional to the signs and symptoms associated with schizophrenia.
2. Glutamate Hypothesis
This suggests that surplus or low levels of glutamate action show symptoms of schizophrenia due to the association with neurotransmitters like dopamine and GABA.
3. DISC hypothesis
DISC hypothesis reveals that a protein with different functions like neuronal migration, cortical layering, etc has been identified which are applicable to schizophrenia.
