In PET scanning patient is given radiotracer such as F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose or FDG. FDG is similar to glucose. Cancer cells are known to perform higher metabolism than the normal body cells hence their glucose requirement is comparatively higher. When patient is given radiotracer molecules such as FDG, these molecules start to accumulate in the cancerous sites and release radioactivity. Detection of radioactivity help in detecting the spread of the cancer.
